Garden

In my mind landscape design is designing an art installation. When a garden is complete, from any point in the garden your view in any direction with the aid of an empty picture frame should be so that it makes a painting (Golden Mean).

In art the Fibonacci line is critical to the composition of paintings. In landscape design it is critical to creating a balance of mass and void - for example, areas of shrubs and trees balanced by the open spaces of lawns.

The positioning of planting, so that it is enlivened by the backlighting of the sun from the north and the ever changing tones created by the morning and late afternoon sun, is the equivalent in painting to the tones achieved by highlighted colour.

The placing of plant material creates a contrast with spaces of no planting and the use of different plant forms contrasts the erect with the recumbent or prostrate and so forth.
